Volkswagen Golf

This year’s Volkswagen Golf is not just one model this time around as it is now an entire model line in itself. Aside from the well-established 4-door and 2-door Golf hatchbacks, the family of Golf also includes the spacious Golf SportWagen, the electric eGolf as well as the Golf R and GTI that are performance-oriented.

Taking on a redesign last year, Volkswagen Golf is the biggest it has ever been as it offers better cargo and rear-seat space combined with a smoother ride. The only thing that didn’t change with this entry level ride from Volkswagen is its reasonable base price, the option between diesel and gasoline engines and the lengthy list of available and standard features.

What Meets the Eye

In spite of the total revamp that it has gone through last year, VW Golf line this 2016 can be recognized in an instant. Even though it retains the same 2-box profile, all the surfaces seem to be extremely tailored with its crisp character lines which start at the base of its steeper hood and the latest narrow horizontal grille that is flanked by the clusters of the sharper headlight. Its distinctive C-pillar treatment is also a reminiscent of the older Golf generations which adds to the overall look’s familiarity. This car sits low to the ground, boasting of a wide track that gives it a more purposeful and muscular appearance. The e-Golf and Golf R are 4-door only.

A Look Inside

The 2016 Volkswagen Golf continues the tradition of the upscale look to the interior as it makes use of soft-touch surfaces, high quality materials and on the higher trims, the piano-black accents. Its cabin also has generous shoulder room in the two rows. The volume of the cargo is 16.5 cubic feet under the parcel shelf and the 22.8 cubic feet to its roof. It is also easy to load made possible by the low liftover in the car’s rear hatch. Golf’s rear seat has 60/40 split rear folding back that expands the load space to as much as 52.7 cubic feet if lowered. There are also lots of front seat storage in the door panels and center console.

Under the Hood

The engines of Golf include the turbocharged gasoline 4-cylinder in 2.0 and 1.8 liter displacements. Its 1.8 liter engine is also available with 5-speed manual or the 6-speed automatic transmission. On the other hand, the GTI’s 2.0 liter engine has 6 speed manual transmission or the optional 6-speed DSG automatic. The Golf R has 292-horsepower 2.0 liter has all wheel drive and the latest for 2016 is the 6-speed manual together with the available DSG. The Golf powered by diesel has been paired with 6-speed manual or optional DSG automatic transmission. For the 1.8 liter TSI, unleaded regular is suggested while the 2.0 liter R and GTI need premium fuel. The e-Golf makes use of electric motor with estimated range of 83 miles. This can recharge in around 4 hours on 240-volt outlet and is also compatible with the DC fast-charging stations.
