Will it be enough for the 30% range increase of the i3 to make you interested?
A rumor surfaced not too long ago, stating that BMW will announce its 2019 i3 soon, expected to boast of improvements to the somewhat bland electric range. But, the wait is over because 2019 i3 is now here, bagging a better driving range compared to the earlier model.
Its predecessor is packed with a 33 kWh battery while 2019 model takes it to a higher level with 42.2 kWh. It translates to 153 miles of electric range in the actual world, a remarkable improvement from 2017’s 115 miles. Of course, the range extender model isn’t factored in yet as it still needs to be rated.
According to BMW, the non-range extender model comes with improved range of about 30% and thus, its range extender model wouldn’t be different. It puts the range extender at approximately 225 up to 234 miles although the EPA figures are yet to be revealed to know if this is true.
I3 has two flavors, the first one being 170 hp electric motor, which acts as the base and brings the car from 0 to 60 mph within 7.2 seconds. The 181 HP is the more powerful one, hitting 60 mph in a matter of 6.8 seconds.
It will take about 7.5 hours to charge the i3 to 100% capacity with the use of the level 1 AC charger although it can drop to only 1.5 hours using a fast charger.
Apart from the changes in the battery of the car, BMW also added a few tweaks to its interior and exterior with new trim and color options. Jucaro Beige Metallic is the latest color for 2019, a replacement for the outgoing Protonic Blue Metallic. There are new trim options inside, such as the Mega Carum Spice Grey SensaTec with the Brown Cloth Highlights and the Electronic Brown Trim.
